Leshan Giant Buddha,100 Years in Photos

News from Gochengdoo.com:

One of Sichuan's most well-known attractions is the world's largest stone-carved sitting Buddha, whose pinky toenail can seat several full-grown humans. Its position, at the confluence of three rivers in Sichuan, allows the 1,300-year-old statue to face the sacred Buddhist E'mei Mountain.

For tourists, the area surrounding the sculpture hosts a museum with exhibits on the construction and subsequent renovations of this now-UNESCO heritage site. South of the giant is a pink-walled monastery adorned with scenes from Journey to the West and arhat sculptures. Also nearby is a classic steam train.

Over the millennia, the Buddha's face has been reconstructed numerous times. This photo series shows the changes of the 'world's tallest pre-modern statue' over just the past century.
